After more than a decade of working with people suffering from knee pain in El Paso, I’ve seen people struggle so much with walking, using stairs, and even put on their socks and shoes after having a knee replacement. These problems are to be expected within the first few months after surgery, but not after a year or more.
But there is hope! Another surgery is rarely the solution and there are many natural ways to naturally alleviate the pain and get the knee feeling better enough to give you confidence to use it for everyday activities without problems.
There are so many different causes for pain after a failed knee replacement surgery. The most common cause is that there is a root muscle imbalance that has not yet been resolved. These muscle imbalances at first are painless, but over years cause bad pressures in the knee joint leading to osteoarthritis.
Knee replacement surgery does not address the muscle imbalance. In fact, it often makes the muscle imbalances worse leading to more problems after surgery. This leaves the patient more susceptible to tendon, muscle, ligament, and nerve problems that become aggravated as a result of the muscle imbalance.
Achiness, throbbing, burning pain are the most common ways the knee hurts, especially when it is flared up. In some cases, buckling or the knee giving way will happen, causing people to lose confidence in using their knee for everyday chores.
Of course, your knee surgeon will have to make sure you don’t have an infection and that the surgical hardware is where it’s supposed to be. Once they’ve made sure you’re clear of those problems, then the surgeon will tell you there’s not much else they can do for you.
Some people will experience clicking, knocking, or tapping sensations from the inside of the knee. These are normal as long as they don’t cause pain.
It’s a hopeless feeling for patients that have been left hanging by their surgeon after being told there’s nothing else that could be done for their knee pain. They’ve already tried injections, rounds of PT, biking, using a peddler while watching TV, stretching multiple times per day… the list goes on! Everything short of having the revision surgery is done!
BUT none of this has focused on treating the root cause of the knee pain! This problem was likely there long before surgery, and has not been treated because surgeons specialize in surgery and general physical therapists specialize in helping people recover from surgery.
Exercise choice after surgery tends to be based on just exhaustively tiring out every possible muscle. But this is not productive in correcting the muscle imbalances that lead to knee osteoarthritis and eventually a knee replacement.
Patients who continue to have knee pain long after the joint replacement surgery have been talking to the wrong specialist!
Our treatment approach is focused on correcting the root muscle imbalances and is usually completely unknown by surgeons and PTs. We use a combination of specialist hands-on techniques and a customized exercise plan that is designed to address the root muscle imbalance problem.
Chronic knee pain has been successfully reduced, if not completely cured in our clinic thousands of times. Even for people that have been told that there’s nothing that could be done and it’s something they’ll have to live with.
